The Easiest Way To Build Good Habits
Habits are the ways in which our brain automates a task so that we can focus on the things that need our attention the most. For instance, when we brush our teeth we don’t necessarily think about the strokes of the brush. Instead, we think about how will the meeting at work go.
Hence, habits can be a very effective way of saving time and mental energy. But the problem lies in building good habits. Often times we intend on building a habit, and more often than not, we fail.
Let me share some ways in which I have been able to create and instill new habits in my life
Connecting New Habits With The Existing Ones
By using this trick I was able to build a journaling habit! The secret here is to schedule new habits to existing ones. For example, I wanted to create a habit of journaling in my diary every day. I already had a habit of doing my homework every day. So I told to myself “I will journal every day after completing my homework”. By doing this I made clear where and when I would perform the task of journaling, and this clarity helps in staying consistent. So the next time I am I finish my homework, I know exactly what I need to do next.
Another way of creating new habits is by changing the way you think of them. Here is what I mean, let's say you want to create a habit of reading every day. Normally you would perceive it as a task that needs to be accomplished. You would think, “I need to read today”. Instead, see it as an opportunity. Tell your brain “ Today is an opportunity for me to learn something by reading”. This will help you in realizing the benefits of the task and motivate you in executing it
In the end, I hope these little tricks will help you in creating new habits and indeed enhance your life. Thank You
